Building Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth (BISEG), East Nusa Tenggara

This EU-funded project works to educate local, village-level authorities on the importance of economic planning which considers the requirements and rights of vulnerable groups. Implemented by Humanity & Inclusion (H&I) and CIS Timor, BISEG has helped create participatory planning processes which engage previously marginalised communities. One noteworthy success was the representation – for the first time – of women and people with disabilities in formal development planning meetings in 2019 in Pero Konda village, Sumba Barat Daya District, East Nusa Tenggara.

When H&I and CIS Timor started work in this village on awareness raising with vulnerable groups, I felt inspired to involve these groups in musrenbang (an annual process during which residents meet to discuss community issues and decide priorities). They are part of society and have every right to have their opinions heard.
