ADDING LOCAL VALUE
Flores has experienced unprecedented growth in tourism in recent years with, for example, over 120,000 people now visiting just one attraction – Komodo National Park – annually. However, many local communities are still to benefit economically from this national and international popularity.
Implemented between 2016 and 2019, the EU-funded CREATED project has worked to increase the value of products made in local communities, strengthen supply chains and empower local communities. All products are marketed under the TANIPA brand, and marketing, distribution and sales are supported by community-led small and medium enterprises. Based in Labuan Bajo, the initiative has developed a commercial network with a good reputation for quality products.
The community-led approach is new to us, but we are excited and believe it will ensure continuation of our community production and help increase incomes in what is a poor part of Indonesia.
